Ceilings are the most demanding drywall work: overhead lifting, proper support, and a finish that has to look right under the light that rakes across it.
Ceiling board works against gravity from the moment it goes up. Correct board thickness, fastening pattern and support matter, and finishing has to be careful because ceiling light shows every flaw.
Ceilings are boarded before walls so the wall board supports the ceiling edge. Thicker or sag-resistant board is used where framing is spaced wider, and every sheet is screwed to framing at the correct spacing.
In basements, the plan has to account for ductwork, plumbing and shut-off valves. Bulkheads and access panels are decided before boarding, not after.
Sagging, cracks and water stains each point to a different cause. A stained but solid ceiling can sometimes be sealed and refinished; soft or sagging board should be cut out and replaced once the moisture source is fixed.

Ceilings are lit by windows and fixtures at a low angle, which exaggerates ridges and seams. A careful finish — or a skim coat on older ceilings — is what keeps the surface looking flat.
